In The Beginning
The LuBean’s, at least the name, goes back to the 1860’s or so when Great Grandfather Moses LuBean came to the US from Canada. He couldn’t read or write so somehow he got ‘assigned’ the name Labean, Lebean, or lubean. Through a lot of research and DNA testing we came to understand that the name ‘LuBean’ comes from a translation or transliteration of the words ‘the bean’. In French, through some levels of interpretation, the name comes from the common French name LeFebvre or LeFevre. This name in French circles and means ‘smith’ (like blacksmith). The old French ‘feve’ and its derivations come from the Latin form of the ‘faba’ bean which is still used in Europe. It is not too much of a stretch to see that LuBean (la bean or the bean) derives from the old ‘faba’ bean. It is a mystery how or why Grandpa Moses got the Lubean surname since he was Moses LeFebvre from Canada.
